The John Lamkin “Sacred” Jazz Quintet is the religious extension of The John Lamkin “Favorites” Jazz Quintet. While the “Favorites” performs a repertoire of straight-ahead jazz standards, the “Sacred” Jazz Quintet performs a repertoire of hymns and spirituals closely associated with the Africa-American worship experience, all arranged in a straight-ahead jazz style. Bebop improvisational technics associated with the jazz quintets led by Horace Silver, Miles Davis and Art Blakey, are the hallmark of both groups. The “Sacred” Jazz Quintet has performed for several churches in the Baltimore area including; Timothy Baptist Church, New All Saints Catholic Church, Waters A&E , and Grace Presbyterian Church. The band regularly performs a repertoire of straight-ahead jazz arrangements of familiar sacred tunes, jazz standards, as well as a few originals compositions.
